Accused Hospital Shooter Makes First Court Appearance

By Katie Kozak. CREATED Nov 19, 2013

MILWAUKEE -- The man accused of bringing a gun into Children's Hospital of Wisconsin will sit behind bars for the foreseeable future.

Police escorted Ashanti Hendricks, 22, into two courtrooms today. The first was to address a prior offense; a judge remanded bail for those charges. The second found Hendricks facing a full slate of new charges relating to the Children's Hospital shooting, including illegally possessing a firearm as a felon. The judge in that courtroom set bail at $25,000 - but it didn't matter because bail was remanded in Hendricks' other case.

Prosecutors allege Hendricks is the reason why police chased him on the 7th floor neo-natal unit at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Officers report Hendricks pulled out a gun, and they shot him in retaliation.

Hendricks sustained only minor injuries to his hand, but today he sat handcuffed to a wheelchair. He will return to court for a preliminary head on November 25th.
