Special Report: Desmond's comeback
GREEN BAY - 2012 was supposed to be a stand-out year for Desmond Bishop.
The Packers linebacker was engaged to be married, he had a new contract, a starting position and a strong desire to get back to the Super Bowl. But a season-ending injury in the pre-season against the San Diego Chargers changed all that.
"I felt the pain immediately. I knew at that moment - my worst fear in football was being realized," said Bishop.
An MRI showed a serious injury to his hamstring. Bishop needed surgery - and knew his season was in jeopardy.
"Nobody officially told me I was out, until one day I was in the training room, and Ted Thompson came up to me and said, 'You're on IR. Your season is over.'"
Fresh off his San Francisco wedding, the newlywed truly had to rely on his wife, Geeta - the woman he fell in love with 11-years-ago when they were seniors in high school.
"It sucks all the life out of you, and you realize - this is why we made those vows - through sickness and health. We are getting tested right now. This is what marriage is. You're going to hit bumps in the road - but you suck it up, and make it work," said Geeta Bishop.
From helping him walk, to stocking the fridge - Geeta has been by his side.
"He'd be like 'no - I don't need help, I'm fine!' But, then he'd realize - he can't do everything right now."
Lately, distance has been their biggest challenge. Since October, Desmond has been flying back and forth between Green Bay and San Diego - where he works with a trainer on his leg - trying to get healthy for next season.
"Right now, I'm plugging away. Some days - I get up and walk... go to the bathroom... and I don't feel anything. It's getting a lot better!" said Desmond.
"I'm just in awe of him. He makes me a better person - and want to be a better person. Not just in football - but in life, "said Geeta.
"In football and real life, we are faced with setbacks... but a setback is only setting you up for a great comeback... I will be back," said Desmond.
Aside from planning his comeback, Desmond is also using this time to finish his first movie script! It's a "sports-love" story. He's already met with a director out in California.
This December, Desmond & Geeta are planning a "Winter Wonderland Fashion Gala" to raise money for his foundation. If you'd like to attend, it's December 21st in Oneida. Tickets cost $55.
