Waupaca Cheese Plant to Close
WAUPACA, Wis.--Kraft Foods plans to close a Waupaca cheese plant and will lay off 120 employees.
The company made the announcement on Tuesday. The plant will close in the second quarter of 2013.
Joyce Hodel, a Kraft Foods spokeswoman, said the plant didn't have enough volume to supports its overhead in a cost-effective way. She added that the plant has limited space.
"We are still working through many details," she said. "As we go through the transition, we will be contacting the Department of Workforce Development to make sure our employees can take advantage of job training and other assistance the department offers."
Hodel said Kraft Foods would offer a severance package based on years of service. She said the company planned to add 20 jobs at its Wausau plant, and Waupaca workers will be given priority for those jobs.
The plant was built in 1954 and was acquired by Kraft in 1987.
