Driver Charged in Crash
FOND DU LAC COUNTY---A Hilbert man recovering in the hospital will be heading straight to jail when he feels better. The 25-year-old slammed into a group of motorcycles Thursday killing Dan Winsemius of Michigan.
Investigators are still trying to figure-out what made the driver cross the center line hitting 10 motorcycles head-on in Fond Du Lac County.
"I'm told there were passerbys stabilizing necks and putting blankets on people that were involved in the crash," Dr. Ray Georgon said.
Three motorcyclists are still fighting for their lives at Theda Clark in Neenah.
"We had one patient as they were landing on their helicopter pad, went into full cardiac arrest, and required CPR on a helicopter pad. There were numerous shocks to restart his heart," Dr. Georgon said.
Operations Captain Dean Will says the driver faces one count of homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle. Blood tests were sent to a crime lab to see if he was drinking.
"From what we believe from the scene itself, it does not appear that he did brake, prior to impact," Capt. Will said.
We did try to get in touch with the victims' families, but they didn't want to comment. The driver also faces a bail jumping charge in Calumet County that's drug related. Investigators have not yet released his name.
