Feeling sleepy? Take a coffee nap!
Do you ever feel sleepy in the middle of the day and take a short nap or drink a cup of coffee in an effort to stay alert? Do you ever feel that one or the other just isn't enough? You might want to try a coffee nap.
Researchers have determined that having a cup of coffee and immediately take a nap is far more effective than just a nap or just a cup of coffee.
It works like this. There is a molecule in your brain called adenosine which is responsible for making people feel sleepy. Coffee or caffeine blocks some adenosine receptors, but not all of them. That is why you may still feel tired after drinking a cup of coffee.
Sleep also clears adenosine from a person's brain.
So, if you drink a cup of coffee and then immediately go to sleep, the combination of the two will get rid of all the adenosine.
The trick though is to only sleep 20 minutes. Scientists say that if people sleep longer, they go into the deeper stages of sleep, which may make it difficult to wake up.
So, the next time you are feeling tired, have a cup of coffee and take a quick nap. It just might work!
