Lawmakers Debate Prescription Drug Registry For Missouri

By Mike Morgan. CREATED Jul 25, 2014

(MissouriNet)-Missouri is the only state without a prescription drug registry.

Farmington State Representative Kevin Engler has tried for the last eight years to pass a bill creating such a database. He argues a monitoring program could prevent abuse, keep addicts from buying more than what's legal, and prevent death by overdose.

St. Joesph State Senator Rob Schaaf continues to oppose collecting that kind of information. He says other states have had problems with hackers. His concern centers around what could happen to law abiding citizens when medical information falls into the wrong hands.  He wants people to think about whether the government should know what prescriptions you're taking.

Critics also argue there is no solid evidence to show such monitoring programs are effective in preventing death.
