IRS Wants You To Be Wary Of New Phone Scam Targeting Taxpayers
(Missourinet) - The IRS is warning taxpayers about a highly sophisticated phone scam now making the rounds, often targeting recent immigrants as well as regular citizens.
People receive an unexpected phone call from the IRS telling them they owe money and must pay it immediately with a prepaid debit card or wire transfer.
If they refuse to cooperate, they are threatened with arrest, deportation or license revocation.
An agency spokesman says the IRS will never get in touch by phone, email or social media, but will send a letter through the mail.
