Springfield fire crews worked to contain a fire at the Springfield Landfill that started early Saturday evening.
Battalion Chief Kevin Smart says several acres of trash were on fire when crews arrived.
“Their main concern was to keep the fire from spreading over to a covering they have which they didn’t want to be damaged. It was very expensive. What we did was we did a pack at the leading edge of the fire. We held the fire there until they were able to cover everything with a layer of clay. “
Smart said another issue they faced was the need for water and they relied on several area fire departments to help bring in the supplies. He says they were there for over three hours. No word yet on what caused the fire.
