Springfield On Tap For MU Medical School Campus

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Springfield's medical and business leaders say they are encouraged that a new budget approved by Missouri legislators includes $10 million to help fund a medical school campus in Springfield.

State lawmakers on Thursday passed a nearly $25 billion budget that still must be signed by Gov. Jay Nixon.

The Springfield News-Leader reports the $10 million would allow 32 students from each class at the University of Missouri to spend their final two years of medical school in Springfield. The students would work with doctors from CoxHealth and Mercy Hospital Springfield.

At least $30 million in additional funding is still needed.

The University of Missouri's medical school can accept 96 new medical students a year. A Springfield campus would increase that number to 128 students.
