Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Hyde Park Middle School is representing Las Vegas in Washington, D.C. Their women's choir was invited to perform in a prestigious showcase. But, we discovered, there are many champions at this school.
It's a beautiful sound at Hyde Park Middle school. The sound of a women's choir that won a competition in San Diego and is bound for Washington.
Choir Director Alison Aquila said, "For them to get to the nation's Capitol, Smithsonian, Capitol tour on top of the music. That's education. They're getting a really well rounded education experience."
Aquila is so talented, three of her four choirs that recently competed in San Diego were invited to Washington. In the end, she selected her women's choir to go.
But the choir is just part of the Hyde Park story. There are champions all over this school. Principal Anna Belknap offered to get a few of her state champions together in the library for us. There's the science bowl team which competes in a jeopardy style quiz competition. There is the math counts team, they've won state 5 out of the last 6 years. They're heading to Orlando for nationals.
Also Orlando bound? 11 time state championship Science Olympiad team. One team member built a robot, which picks objects up off the ground. Bright brains built this one too. "We have to build an elastic powered vehicle. So the fishing rod powers the vehicle."
Also state champions? The Future Cities Team. They came in 13th in the nation in a recent competition for their plan to rebuild Auckland, New Zealand after an earthquake and tsunami.
"We rebuilt it with new, futuristic technology so that everyone is safe and happy."
Now back to that choir. Did we mention they are the only middle school choir invited to this competition? They'll be performing with high schools and even one collegiate choir. That's how good they are.
