Firefighters, animal control and local resident rescue baby duck

By Joyce Lupiani. CREATED Jul 25, 2014

A group of Las Vegas firefighters and an animal control officer took time out of their busy day on Friday to help a mama duck and her babies.

According to local resident and lawyer Rena Hughes, she was helping them across the street around 8:30 a.m. when one of the ducklings slipped into the storm drain.

She tried for an hour to rescue the young duck, but finally gave up. That is when she went to Las Vegas Fire Department No. 9, located near Lone Mountain Road and Rancho Drive, and asked for their help.

The firefighters were more than willing to lend their assistance and accompanied Hughes back to the location where the duckling disappeared. An animal control officer also arrived on scene to lend assistance.

The group worked for another hour to retrieve the duckling. They were finally successful and mama duck and the duckling were reunited. The ducks, eight in total, are now swimming in the pond in the Los Prados community.

The firefighters who rescued the duck were Capt. Cliff Robinson, Chris Banks and Ryan Dalton. Animal control officer Julie Weaver also participated in the rescue.
