Prom dates selected in NFL-style draft at California high school

The NFL draft begins Thursday night, but there is another kind of draft underway at a Southern California high school.

The prom draft has been a tradition for the junior and senior boys at Corona Del Mar High School for several years, but now they are taking heat for it.

It works like this: Male students draw draft picks in a lottery, but can pay to improve their draft number so they can pick the date of their choice.

According to the Deadspin, a junior paid $140 to get a high first-rank pick so he could select a specific girl.

The mostly-secret tradition, which is not sanctioned by the school, was exposed over Twitter this week, and now the school's principal is taking a stand against the draft.

Fox News says Principal Kathy Scott sent an email over this weekend that said this: "I am sure that the intention of this 'draft' is not meant to be harmful, but it may. It is not OK for any student to be objectified or judged in any way."

Some students say they are not fans of the draft, but others are fighting back, saying that the negative attention and potential punishments are overreaction. Even some of the parents are defending the practice.
