Residents fed up waiting for storm clean up

Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- Tenants at a Henderson apartment complex said they are tired of waiting for someone to clean up the mess left behind by a series of storms from about two weeks ago.

People who live in Crystal Creek Apartments off West Warm Springs Road near Green Valley Parkway said high winds and rain caused a carport to collapse. 
The mangled metal is one of several structures damaged in apartment complexes around the valley following a series of storms in mid-July.
"They need it fixed and they need it fixed quick," said renter Derrick Singleton.
Part of the collapsed structure is touching the ground. Other parts are surrounded by yellow tape.
"Even where we're standing right now, it could fall at anytime," said tenant Jesse Colosky.
Colosky said his family notified the main office about the problem. But after looking at the debris for the past two weeks, he's had enough. Colosky emailed Action News.
"There's no excuse for it," said Colosky. "None whatsoever."
The structure has also led to concerns about safety for children in the neighborhood.
"There's a lot of kids that like to play around and skateboard out here," said Singleton. "I don't know if they actually play under here but it's dangerous if there's kids around."
Action News took the tenants' concerns straight to the main office.
Community manager Audrey Fukao did not want to go on camera. Fukao said the complex wanted to clean up the debris right away but ran into issues with bids for contractors. The manager would only say the complex is taking steps to address the problem.
So what can you do if you still have storm damage in your complex?
Tenants should consider putting their complaints in writing if they feel the landlord isn't doing enough to fix the problem, said Cecy Roa, intake specialist with the Tenant's Rights Center at Nevada Legal Services.
"Do it in writing. Keep a copy," said Roa. "If they want to 14-day-notice them to make repair, send it certified returned receipt and keep a copy for himself."
After a visit from Action News, Colosky said maintenance crews put more beams under the structure to keep it from falling farther and added yellow tape.
The manager said removal should take less than a week, once the complex settles on a contractor.
