Action News helps woman get $200 from satellite company

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Everyone likes a good deal. But one Las Vegas woman says when she signed up with a new television provider, she didn't get the bargain she expected.

"I'm very happy. Very, very happy," said Mildred Whitfield.

She's smiling now, but that's only because a very long battle with her satellite TV company is finally over. Mildred said it all started nearly six months ago, after getting a special offer.

"I did get this in the mail, and there was a deadline," said Mildred.

The ad promised a $200 gift card, if she signed up for service by May 6. Mildred said she called just one day before the deadline, and the company came out the very next day to set everything up. But she had to wait for her gift card.

"At first they told me 4 to 6 weeks," said Mildred.

So she waited. But when it didn't show up, Mildred called the satellite company, and this time, got a different answer.

"Well it takes 8 to 10 weeks. And I said, well I was told from the beginning 4 to 6 weeks," said Mildred.

So she waited a couple more months, but never got anything. So she called again, and was surprised by what customer service had to say this time.

"They told me that I didn't sign up in time. And I said, I beg your pardon, I signed up on May 5. I was very upset," said Mildred.

That's when she picked up the phone, and reached out to our Call for Action volunteers.

"I'm very persistent, and if you promise $200 to me, I'm going to figure out some sort of way I'm going to get it," said Mildred.

And it didn't take long for the satellite company to respond.

"They called me the next day, and that they would be mailing the card to me," said Mildred.

A couple weeks later, Mildred finally has her gift card. And she's telling all her friends, if they need help with something, call Contact 13.

"Do not hesitate, write the number down and call. Channel 13 gets action," said Mildred.

So here's the Contact 13 bottom line: When dealing with any company, if customer service isn't giving you the help you need, ask for a supervisor. And don't be afraid to contact the company's corporate office.
