Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Many of you have contacted action news about issues involving tenants rights. And one of the biggest complaints is what to do when a landlord won't fix your heat.
Well as Darcy Spears reports, when one viewer couldn't get any help, he reached out to Contact 13.
"It was miserable sleeping. It's freezing cold. I have every blanket in the house on and it's still cold in here," says Josh Herrington.
He works 6 days a week and says when he's home, all he wants to do is relax. But that's tough to do when your heat isn't working.
"And the thermostat on here says 45 degrees inside the house. Like that's freezing in here," says Josh.
He says he called his landlord several times, and was told someone would come by to check it out. But that never happened.
"Nobody came out. Ever. So I called again a few days later before Thanksgiving and l was like guys my heater doesn't work I have people coming into town for Thanksgiving," says Josh.
But Thanksgiving came and went. Josh still couldn't get his heat fixed. And he wasn't very happy with one suggestion.
"She tells me, what you could do if you're heater is not working is buy a space heater. And I'm like, I'm not buying a space heater for the house," says Josh.
That's when he decided to reach out to Contact 13. And he couldn't be happier.
"I don't know what you said to them, but the next day the heater guys were here to install everything. I've been calling for weeks and no response. But one call from you and that's all it took. So I really really appreciate that," says Josh.
So here's the Contact 13 bottom line. If your heat goes out, you must contact your landlord in writing. Send an email, certified letter, or have them sign a letter acknowleding they're aware of the issue. Then they have 48 hours to fix the problem.
Keep in mind, while heat is considered an essential service, it has to get below 15 degrees before your place can legally be considered uninhabitable.
