World Routes event taking place in Las Vegas this weekend

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Some have called it dating for airlines. For the first time, the World Routes conference is coming to the United States and it'll be right here in Las Vegas.

About 40 million passengers are expected to pass through the gates at McCarran International Airport this year, generating about $40 billion in revenue locally.

But county and tourism leaders are hoping to increase that number with this weekend's World Routes conference.

This is the first time the event will be held in the U.S., which is in its 19th year. It brings together representatives from 300 airlines and 750 airports.

The goal is to give the airports a chance to make a case for why airlines should schedule flights to their city.

Clark County leaders and the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority are hoping the airline leaders, who are getting a first-hand look at what the area has to offer, will be more inclined to do business at McCarran.

Throughout the conference, more than 8,000 meetings are expected to take place between the airlines and airport representatives.

Gov. Brian Sandoval is also expected to stop by the conference on Monday afternoon.
