Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The folks at the Glenn Group office on East Charleston Boulevard came up with a great idea.
They decided to share their space and their advertising and public relations expertise with budding entrepreneurs who want to become part of the revitalization of downtown.
But a contest they ran in August turned out better than they planned, with two winners with the wow factor.
Record Setter and Computers for a Cause beat out more than a dozen competitors for $1 office space. That's all they'll pay per month for a year.
The Glenn Group's public relations director Chris Charles Scott said, "There's a certain point in a startup's life where you need that break. Where you need to be taken seriously. Where you need this professional environment, and this is that big break for a lot of the companies."
Record Setter, a quirky company that posts videos of people setting their own world records, moved to Las Vegas from New York.
Co-founder Corey Henderson said, "The community, I think, is the number one thing that's impressed us the most. New York, there is a tech community but it's not a true community in the way that we've discovered here downtown."
Computers for a Cause, a non-profit that refurbishes used computers and donates them, moved to Las Vegas from Los Angeles
Co-founder Gabe Middleton said, "We saw the need, and the Downtown Project seems like Las Vegas is real primed and ready to really start getting the community involved, especially surrounding technology."
The Glenn Group, along with the Downtown Project, is creating a tech community. They're providing funding and expertise; helping tech start-ups stay up.
Chris Charles Scott said, "We've created this environment where there's these creative collisions; this collaboration of great minds."
Gabe Middleton said, "Just being surrounded by that type of mindset is going to be huge for us."
At the end of the year both companies hope they'll outgrow the Glenn Group office space to move into spaces of their own.
