Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A local tax driver picked up a poker player at The Cosmopolitan hotel-casino on Monday morning who accidentally left behind a lot more than a tip.
$300,000 in cash was just sitting in a paper bag in the back of his cab.
It could have bought him one amazing Christmas gift, but instead of pocketing the cash, the driver made sure the money was returned to its rightful owner.
Gerardo Gamboa said he and his passenger paid too little attention to one another to notice the man left behind a brown paper bag.
Gerardo said it was his next customer who alerted him that something was in the backseat.
"I was surprised, I thought it was a bag of chocolate," said Gamboa.
However, what was inside the bag was a lot sweeter than chocolate.
He found six stacks of money, totaling $300,000.
Realizing just how much money was in his cab, the driver returned here to Yellow-Checker-Star headquarters, and handed the bag over to his stunned supervisor and waited for the owner to come and claim it.
Gamboa received a $1,000 reward from his bosses at Checker Cab.
Although it's nowhere near the amount of cash left behind in his taxi, he said the gift comes with a greater value.
"I did the right thing for myself, for my family, for my company and the city of Las Vegas," said Gamboa.
