Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A suspect has been taken into custody following an alleged sexual assault of a student.
At approximately 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Las Vegas police responded to C.W. Woodbury Middle School on East Harmon Avenue to investigate reports of a juvenile who had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted.
The victim was locking up her bicycle at the school when the suspect approached her and then dragged her behind the school. He held her at knife-point and sexually assaulted her multiple times.
Metro's Lt. Dan McGrath said, "She put up a fight and was able to free herself and run out into Harmon. The young juvenile did have several cuts on her arms from the knife."
The girl flagged down a passing motorist who called police.
After a short foot chase, the suspect identified as 48-year-old Richard Martin Schlacta of California, was taken into custody.
He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of sexual assault of a victim under 14 (3 counts), attempted sexual assault of a victim under 14, kidnapping, coercion with force or threat of force, battery with a deadly weapon and battery with intent to commit a sexual assault.
Metro said the suspect was staying at a motel in the area off Koval and Tropicana. Action News contacted the Motel 6 at the intersection, and motel staff confirmed that a Richard Schlacta had stayed there on Tuesday night.
Near C.W. Woodbury Middle School, residents are having a hard time accepting the news.
"There's no words to describe that. It's appalling. I just can't imagine," said resident John Warnock. Wife Tish Warnock added, "Nobody would ever expect this to happen in this neighborhood. That's despicable. That's disgusting."
Prior to this incident, Schlacta had no local arrest record.
