Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The suspect in a recent robbery has died from his injuries sustained in a police pursuit.
On May 11 at approximately 5 a.m., patrol officers were dispatched to the South Point Hotel and Casino to investigate reports of an armed robbery. The victim reported being robbed at gunpoint and pistol whipped by three males who then fled the scene.
A patrol officer observed the suspect vehicle traveling northbound on Las Vegas Boulevard make an abrupt turn onto eastbound Windmill Lane across two lanes of traffic. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it did not stop and the officer initiated a pursuit.
The pursuit continued to the area of Cedar Street and North Mojave Road where another patrol officer attempted the Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT). The suspect vehicle accelerated in an attempt to continue northbound on Mojave Road. The vehicle left the roadway, went over a curb, and struck a wall of concrete blocks and wrought iron that surrounded a business complex.
The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 24-year old Antonio Chavez, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Chavez was taken into custody near Cedar Avenue and Wardelle Street.
The rear passenger in the vehicle, later identified as 29-year old Demone Lewis, was taken into custody near the vehicle.
The front seat passenger, later identified as 22-year old Rajan Sroya, was impaled by a portion of wrought iron fence that had penetrated the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
Chavez and Lewis were transported to the Clark County Detention Center. Sroya was transported to the UMC Trauma Center and was booked in absentia.
The investigation into this incident revealed the vehicle had been stolen in a robbery and carjacking earlier in the morning on May 11. At approximately 12:45 a.m. the victim of this crime was sitting in the vehicle near the 4500 block of East Sahara Avenue and was approached by three males. One of the males produced a handgun and demanded the victim’s vehicle.
On June 27, Sroya succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the police pursuit on May 11.
