Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The man accused of a carjacking that led to the death of one man and serious injury to another has been identified as 29-year-old James Robert Montgomery of Tustin, Calif.

According to the arrest report, Montgomery stole a 2009 Ford F150 that was parked in the valet area of the Flamingo on Sunday morning.

The incident began shortly before 11 a.m. Jesus Manuel Magdaleno Jr., 33, and Felix Brandon Cruz, 31, were loading their belongings into the truck.

Montgomery jumped into the driver's seat and began driving away.

Cruz was in the bed of the truck at the time and Magdaleno began chasing the truck on foot, shouting that he was a police officer as he chased the truck.

Magdaleno caught up the truck when it stopped for traffic and jumped in the bed of the truck with Cruz.

Magdaleno continued yelling at Montgomery as he sped down Flamingo, ordering him to stop.

According to witnesses, Montgomery sped west on Flamingo, hitting construction cones and running red lights.

As he approached the intersection of Flamingo and Valley View Boulevard, he was struck by a Ford Escape that was turning onto Valley View.

Magdaleno and Cruz were thrown from the bed of the truck. Magdaleno was killed and Cruz was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Montgomery was also injured and transported to the hospital, where he remains. Montgomery told detectives that he knew he was in a car accident but did not remember what led up to it or why he was at the hotel-casino.

According to data retrieved from stolen truck, the suspect was accelerating at the time of the collision.

Montgomery has been charged with murder, kidnapping, robbery, battery and grand larceny auto.

Magdaleno was identified in the arrest report as a California Highway Patrol officer.
