New details released into Henderson officer-involved shooting

By Krista Hostetler. CREATED Aug 20, 2013

Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- A 63-year-old man, who ambushed a Henderson police officer sitting in a patrol car, was shot as officers returned fire. The suspect later died.

On Tuesday at 8 a.m., a police officer in a marked patrol car was conducting traffic control from an earlier accident on Boulder Highway, just south of College Avenue. The officer heard what she thought at first was fireworks and subsequently turned to her left to see a man approaching her from the median firing a handgun.

Several shots hit the patrol car, shattering the rear driver's side window. The officer was able to put the patrol car in gear and pull away while radioing that she was under fire.

Officers at the nearby accident scene immediately headed to assist the officer. As the officers approached, the suspect, who was walking across Boulder Highway, started firing at them striking at least one other police vehicle.

The officers stopped the patrol cars and got out to confront the suspect. Under fire from the approaching gunman, the officers returned fire at the suspect. Three officers fired their weapons.

The suspect was struck and taken to Sunrise Hospital, where he later died. His name has not been released.

It is believed the suspect rode a motorcycle to the area and parked it across Boulder Highway from the first officer. Officers found three handguns on the suspect and a rifle in the side bag of the motorcycle.

The officers were placed on routine paid administrative leave during the investigation.

Detectives are investigating what prompted the suspect to ambush officers, but it's unclear of his motive. It does not appear to be related to the earlier accident.

That accident occurred at about 4:35 a.m. on Boulder Highway near Horizon Drive. A driver struck a pedestrian who tried to cross the roadway.

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in the crash. The pedestrian died at the scene.

Fatal Accident Investigators were at this accident at the time of the shooting. Traffic was being diverted in both directions on Boulder Highway between College Avenue and Horizon Drive.
