Local McDonald's workers rally for a raise

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Fast food workers in Las Vegas say they want a raise.

A small rally was held outside of the McDonald's near Palace Station on Friday. Activists and fast food workers celebrated a groundbreaking decision.

They were applauding the National Labor Relations Board Counsel's determination this week that McDonald's is a joint employer along with thousands of independent franchise workers.

That means McDonald's can't claim it is unable to raise its wages because it doesn't have the authority to do so.

Activists said this strengthens the fight of fast food workers who are calling for a raise in their minimum wage.

Fast food workers here and nationwide have been rallying for more than a year to have their minimum wage bumped up to $15 an hour.

McDonald's released a statement saying:

"McDonald’s does not direct or co-determine the hiring, termination, wages, hours, or any other essential terms and conditions of employment of our franchisees' employees, which are the well-established criteria governing the definition of a joint employer."
