Las Vegas family adopts puppy from Afghanistan

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Christmas came early for a Las Vegas family. They have a new addition to their family.

It happened because a sergeant serving his country halfway around the world became attached to a dog there.

That dog became pregnant and gave birth but almost lost one of her puppies. That puppy now has a family in Las Vegas.

The puppy's name is Lucky and she is four months old. She just arrived from Afghanistan.

Christina Preston and her husband Robert are stationed at Nellis Air Force Base. Christina's brother-in-law is stationed in Afghanistan. He took care of Lucky's mom during her pregnancy and she gave birth to a litter of 11 puppies.

Lucky almost didn't make it though. Her mother accidentally smothered her and she stopped breathing but Christina's brother-in-law was able to save the small puppy.

Lucky's adoption was made possible through the  nonprofit Puppy Rescue Mission. They help soldiers stationed overseas to bring home dogs that they have become attached to during their tours of duty.

Now Lucky has a new family and someone for her to become attached to. Christina and Robert say that the puppy is for their 8-month-old daughter Brooklyn.

The Preston's already have two other rescue dogs at home and they will be spending the rest of the year blending their new family.
