FDA considering three-person embryo procedure

By Krista Hostetler. CREATED Feb 26, 2014

Washington (KTNV) -- U.S. health officials are considering an experimental fertilization technique that makes it possible to create a baby from the DNA of three people.

A Food and Drug Administration panel held two days of hearings on the procedure.

Scientists said it could prevent babies from inheriting genetic diseases, like muscular dystrophy.

Here's how it works: Doctors remove defective genetic material from a mother's egg, and replace it with healthy material from another woman.

The fertilized egg is then implanted in the mother.

Critics said it opens the door to creating so-called "designer babies."

VOTE NOW: Should scientists move forward with this procedure?
