Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Saturday is the end of extended unemployment benefits for more than one million Americans.
Congress did not extend the emergency program, so for most people around the country, after they've reached 26 weeks of payments the money runs out.
Here locally there are about 17,000 Nevadans who will no longer be receiving a check, and some are wondering how they are going to keep a roof over their head.
"We are not going to eat. It is going to be at the point where we are going to have to rely on the food bank at this point. We won't be able to afford food," Holly Clements said.
After losing her maintenance job about a year ago, Clements has been relying on emergency unemployment extensions to provide the $282 a week that helps keep her and her husband fed.
"He doesn't make enough to sustain us and pay all of the bills," Clements said.
Employment experts said the loss of income will have an impact on everyone.
"People have come to depend on this and also this is money that is put back into the economy as it is used at the grocery store and to pay utilities and that help keep the economy going," Mae Worthey with the Nevada Department of Employment said.
Unemployment leaders are encouraging people to continue filing their claims for those extensions in case congress decides to reinstate them when they come back into session, which people like Holly are hopeful for.
"Obviously we don't know when this is going to happen, or if this is going to happen, but it would certainly be easier than trying to start up a brand new claim," Worthey said.
They are also encouraging people to look at part time work as an option.
Clements said she has been looking everywhere, but said her resume is one of dozens in the pile for every job, even those that involve flipping burgers.
“If it says they are hiring I'm applying, 7-11, McDonald's I'm applying," Clements said.
The Nevada Department of Employment is still encouraging people who are losing their benefits to visit their Job Connect locations to take advantage all of the job search tools available.
