CCSD: Students eligible for bus service should register now

By Denise Wong. CREATED Aug 12, 2014

Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- It was a busy morning at the Clark County School District's transportation phone bank as workers took calls from parents.

On opening day on Monday, they handled more than 2,000 calls and they expected about the same amount on Tuesday.

Phone bank operator Maria Gonzalez understands what parents on the other line are going through. She had to register her own kids for bus service.

She and other operators aren't putting a lot of callers on hold, but as we get closer to the first day of school on Aug. 25., "The wait can last up to 30 minutes."

But parents have to be prepared. A big mistake many make is not registering their kids for school before calling. Without doing that and getting that student identification number, the people at the transportation phone bank can't help.

Jim Reynolds, who is the transportation operations manager for the Clark County School District, said there is an even easier way for parents to register their kids for bus service and find out their routing information, just go online.

"There are better resources for parents that are a lot easier than sitting on the phone, waiting for an operator to pick up," said Reynolds.

Student ID numbers and date of births are required to access registration information online, but once there, parents can access their child's bus eligibility, bus stops, routes, times and more.

There is also a live chat feature which enables parents to chat with a member of the transportation department in real time.

Reynolds said CCSD has had to make a lot of changes over the summer to the bus routes because of all the rezoning and the addition of ten more year-round schools this year.

CCSD bus drivers transport more than 100,000 students each day, which includes 19,000 stops and 9,000 door-to-door special needs stops.

The phone number for parents to call to register their kids for transportation service or to ask general questions about routing information is (702) 799-8100.

The call center is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

It will remain open until Sept. 6.
