CCSD still looking to hire hundreds of teachers for this school year

Clark County, NV (KTNV) -- Students will return to class in just over two weeks, but the district is still facing a major teacher and staff shortage.

The district is in dire need of elementary school teachers with hundreds of positions still vacant, and the district is working on a plan if it can't get all the jobs filled.

Students at Forbuss Elementary School are part of a year-round program, and interacting with the students is the best part of Principal Shawn Paquette's job.

"Working with the students everyday, there really is nothing better than seeing students work hard, smile, enjoy learning."

Principal Paquette hopes others will see reward working with children, and apply for a teaching job at the district. The district said it's having trouble getting teachers to come to the area.

"When we're competing against every other state to get candidates here, we have less teachers to recruit from," said Ryan Yanagi with CCSD Human Resources.

Before the start of next school year, CCSD still needs to hire 650 teachers, 150 bus drivers and 150 teacher aids.

At Forbuss, Principal Paquette said he's luckily filled all his teaching jobs.

The district said it's looking for teachers whose passion is education.

"Anybody that is going to show student growth, anybody that is committed to education, anybody that wants to make a difference with our kids," said Yanagi.

If the district doesn't fill all the available positions in time, classrooms will have a substitute teacher until a permanent one is hired.

CCSD hopes some of their long-term subs will accept full-time teaching positions.
