CCSD holding teacher orientations, start of school year near

By Denise Wong. CREATED Aug 13, 2014

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Clark County School District began a two-day orientation for new teachers Wednesday morning at the Venetian.

More than 1,200 teachers were expected to attend, along with about 350 long-term substitutes.

This year, CCSD has added a lot of new hires as part of a big effort to reduce class sizes. Many of the new teachers will be working in elementary schools.

New teacher orientation will give these new hires a chance to network and attend professional development sessions.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and CCSD Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky were expected to attend Wednesday's session at the Venetian.

Special guests from Cirque du Soleil will also be in attendance to discuss how they partner with schools and to give new teachers a unique opportunity.

CCSD is still not done hiring teachers for the new school year which kicks off for students on Aug. 25.

The district plans on hiring hundreds more teachers over the next few months.

For teaching positions that have not yet been filled, long-term substitutes will be used to teach classes.
