Government admits existence of Area 51 in Nevada

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The United States government is finally admitting that Area 51 exists.

Many Las Vegans have known the truth for years.

Some of us have worked there, some of us have driven up to the area and seen the keep-out signs, and many of us have seen those mysterious passenger planes headed to the Nevada Test Site.

The government is finally admitting to its existence.

Newly-released CIA documents say it's not as remarkable as many would hope or believe.

There is no mention of aliens or UFO's. The government says that Area 51 was used to test the government's U-2 surveillance program during the Cold War era.

The report also talks about Area 51's role in OXCART, the CIA code-named program that produced the Lockheed A-12 spy plane.

Not all of the details that were released were much of a secret but the declassification opens up the possibility of learning more about Area 51 and its projects.

Area 51 is located about 125 miles northwest of the Las Vegas.

The documents were released as part of a Freedom of Information Act request from 2005.
