Legacy High School coach arrested for sexual misconduct

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A local high school basketball coach was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of sexual misconduct with a 16 year old on his team.

Angelo Cruz, 23, is being held at the Clark County Detention Center on $20,000 bond.

Cruz was a volunteer assistant coach for the Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Team at Legacy High School in North Las Vegas.

According to Clark County School District Police, Cruz was not employed by the school district in any other capacity.

"This shocks and disgusts me," says Carmen Nunez, who has a teenage daughter at Legacy. "We want to believe our children are in good hands at school. This makes me sick to my stomach."

School police say they were tipped off about the alleged misconduct by students, parents, and even staff members.

"We were able to develop enough evidence and probable cause to arrest Cruz," says CCSD Police Sgt. Mitch Maciszak. "He cooperated with our investigation and came into the station Tuesday."

Investigators questioned both Cruz and the young girl and went through text messages the two had allegedly exchanged.

Many students at Legacy say the inappropriate relationship was no secret.

"I heard about it in the hallways and during my PE class actually," says Yeanette Espinoza.

"My teacher brought it up," adds Ariana Goodman. "He said he was surprised. That was the first time I heard about it."

Cruz also volunteered with Legacy's football program.

"He was my football coach," says Davin Thomas. "He was real cool. It was like he understood us. He's young. He was more like our friend."

But police say he crossed a line.

According Cruz's Facebook page, he graduated from Legacy in 2008 and earned a degree at a local school of ministry in 2011.

The age of consent in Nevada is 16 years old. But according to state law, teachers, administrators, coaches and volunteers are prohibited from having sexual relations with a student who attends the school they work or volunteer at.
