Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Thousands of runners and walkers will pound the asphalt on the Las Vegas Strip Sunday night for the 2012 Rock N' Roll Las Vegas Marathon.

The kick-off party was held downtown on Friday night. If the frenzy on Fremont Street was any indication, this year's marathon will be as exciting as last year's event.

Race organizer Nicole Christensen said, "I can tell you as a local that running the Las Vegas strip at night is a once in a lifetime experience."

Christensen said it will be a better experience, thanks to lessons learned from last year.

A new route from the south end of Strip, through downtown, ending mid-Strip, avoids the finish line chaos that erupted at Mandalay Resort, when runners collided with hotel guests.

A private company has been hired to provide water to participants, even though health officials determined, what made about 500 runners sick last year, was a bad virus, not bad water.

About 30,000 people are signed up for the 2012 marathon party. That's down from the 44,000 people who signed up last year, but organizers point out, it was the first time the event was held at night, and they are happy with this year's numbers.
