Witnesses describe horror of deadly stabbing
Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- A lovers' quarrel ends with a mother of three dead and Henderson police say Candace Moffett, 43, was killed by her ex-boyfriend.
Gary Gaston, 59, was booked into the Henderson Detention Center on charges of murder with a deadly weapon, and burglary with a deadly weapon. He's being held there without bail.
Investigators say Gaston stabbed Moffett in her bedroom.
Moffett was renting a room from Lilia Banuelos, in a home near Boulder Highway and Galleria Drive.
"She told me she had nowhere to go, so I offered her a room," Lilia says. "She had been staying with me since the end of October. Gary had been to the house before with Candace, so when he first came in, I didn't think anything of it."
But according to Lilia, things quickly changed.
"He picked up a hammer and broke the lock to Candace's bedroom, after she told him to go away. He had caught her with another man the day before. He just snapped."
And Lilia says once Gary broke down the door, he pulled out a knife.
"It was terrifying," she says. "Lilia was trying to kick him away. We found out later, that he had packed his truck with all his clothes and belongings. He was going to kill her, then leave town. But, my son stopped him."
"Everybody was screaming," Lilia's son, John Daniels says. "I had to do something. So I grabbed a stick and hit him with it. It slowed him down, so he wasn't able to get away before police arrived."
But it was too late to save Candace. She was rushed to Sunrise Trauma where she was pronounced dead.
Police say Gaston admitted to stabbing Candace. Her family now wants justice.
