Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- Police shot and killed a man in Henderson early Wednesday morning after he reportedly aimed a gun at SWAT officers.

The incident started late Tuesday night when a woman called police claiming her ex-boyfriend had assaulted her in a gas station parking lot near Eastern and Serene Avenues. She told police the man was armed.

Henderson police officers found the man near St. Rose Parkway and Eastern Avenue. When they tried to approach him, he ran off and fell into a drainage ditch.

That's when police said he pulled out a gun and aimed it at himself, making suicidal statements.

Officers called on SWAT and negotiators for backup. Officers tried to get the man to surrender peacefully for about two hours.

Just before 2 a.m., police said the man turned the gun on officers, prompting three SWAT officers to shoot the man.

"Officers could see that his finger was on the trigger. He really left the officers with no other choice but to fire," Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul said.

He was pulled from the drainage ditch and declared dead at the scene. Police said they recovered the man's 9-millimeter handgun.

Police said the man -- whose identity was not immediately released -- was a registered felon with a criminal record in California and Nevada.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on routine paid administrative leave.
