Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A man who reportedly opened fire in the parking lot of a busy strip mall was shot and killed by officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Police say that suspect shot another man in the hand.

It happened Monday afternoon in front of the Ross Dress for Less store at 2420 E. Desert Inn Road near Eastern Avenue.

The shooting victim, who was reportedly homeless, was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and is expected to be okay.

The gunman took off, leading responding officers on a chase.

"One of my employees was outside on her break," said Tony Matthews, who works for a telemarketing company nearby. "She ran back inside yelling, 'They shot him, they shot him.' I heard a bang, but I didn't know what it was."

Police believe that bang was the exchange of gunfire between three LVMPD officers and the armed suspect.

Those officers confronted the gunman in an alley behind the Ross, after he tried to get away.

Metro says the gunman was fatally shot after officers gave commands to the suspect, who instead of obeying, produced a handgun from his waistband.

The area was roped off for hours after-wards. More than 10 police cruisers and an ambulance showed up to the scene. Along with Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson.

Action News spoke with a woman, who says she saw the suspect, right before he was shot by police. She did not want to reveal her name.

"He had his hands up for one second," she says. "Then we heard shots, so I don't know if he grabbed for something  or what. It was scary. I just hurried to get back to the office."

The three officers who allegedly fired their weapons are on paid administrative leave until the investigation into what happened is complete. Their names will be released in 48 hours.

The suspect who was fatally shot has not yet been identified.

Police say no one in the strip mall was in danger at any time during the shooting.
