North Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Clark County School District has some bragging rights and it’s the only one in the state to receive recognition for having one of the nation’s best schools.

John C. Vanderburg Elementary School is one of only 269 institutions out of 130,000 in the nation to receive Blue Ribbon designation from the United States Department of Education.

The designation recognizes schools that are either academically superior or have made dramatic gains in student achievement. The Education department also recognizes award winners for helping to close the gap among minority and disadvantaged students.

Vanderburg Elementary School was among the top 10-percent in state tests and 40-percent of the student body come from disadvantaged backgrounds, who achieved dramatic improvements in state testing scores.

"This designation speaks volumes about the level of commitment we have from our staff, students and parents," Principal Catherine Maggiore said. "We are completely dedicated to ensuring that all of our students succeed and have the chance to pursue their dreams."

The school also met Adequate Yearly Progress requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act and was also named as a five-star school within CCSD’s School Performance Framework.

The Five-Star ranking takes into account important factors such as student growth and gaps in achievement between ethnic and ability groups, as well as student attendance, student and parent surveys and dropout rates.

"Vanderburg Elementary showcases everything we are working to emulate across all of our schools," Superintendent Dwight D. Jones said. "It possesses strong leadership, quality teachers in the classroom, an involved community, and ultimately, high levels of academic achievement that ensure students will be ready by exit for college and career."

Vanderburg Elementary School, which opened in 1997, is located in Henderson.
