Feds order unspent Nevada highway funds be used

CREATED Aug 18, 2012

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The Obama Administration is ordering almost $700,000 that went unspent on a previous Nevada road project be freed for other construction around the state.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood's announcement Friday is part of a nationwide call to spend $473 million in unused funds that were tied to specific infrastructure projects between 2003 and 2006.

LaHood says releasing the money will help Nevadans get back to work.

Nevada Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Magruder says Nevada's share was money left over from a project on Interstate 215 at what's known as the Henderson Spaghetti Bowl.

Magruder says a good candidate for the extra money might be a $31 million Las Vegas interchange project on Interstate 15 at Cactus.

States must confirm by Oct. 1 where the unspent money is going.
