Debate continues over airport name change in Las Vegas
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The debate continues: Should McCarran International Airport be renamed?
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority board of directors discussed the topic at a meeting on Tuesday.
But when it comes down to it, the LVCVA board doesn't have the authority to make any decisions regarding the name. That's up to the county commission.
Last month, Councilman Steve Ross pushed to change the name because he says visitors don't associate McCarran with Las Vegas, and that the name of one of the world's most-traveled airports should be more recognizable.
"It's no disrespect to anyone's name that is attached to the airport," Ross said. "It's about promoting what we've got."
Those opposed say it doesn't matter what the airport is called; everyone knows they're flying into Las Vegas.
Commissioner Tom Collins passed out visual aids at Tuesday's meeting: The logo for McCarran International, and right at the top it says 'Las Vegas.'
Another point was made that if you search for 'Las Vegas Airport,' McCarran International is the first item to appear.
