Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Moms and their babies held a unique event Saturday to encourage breastfeeding and also to set a new record.

They held something called a "Latch On" where moms were breastfeeding their babies at the same time.

It was part of a nationwide attempt to break a world record for simultaneous breastfeeding.

"It's the healthiest way for your baby to get a good start in life, and so we're here to help people in our culture, where it's not necessarily something we're taught. We're here to help each other and support each other and love each other," explained Darilyn Cummings, LA Leche League leader.

The current breastfeeding record is 9,000 moms set by women in the Philippines.

There's no word if Saturday's event broke the record.

Locally, 54 mothers and their babies participated in the event in Las Vegas, that's up from only 10 last year.
