Man sets fire to motel; tries to hang himself
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A man is recovering from self sustained injuries after he set a motel on fire forcing dozens of families to evacuate.
Metro says this started Saturday night around 7:30 p.m. when they got the call about a domestic disturbance involving a man already wanted by police. He came to the Motel 6 on Boulder Highway and Desert Inn to confront his ex-girlfriend, and tried to win her back.
At one point she called 911 when he reportedly took her new boyfriend's car and took off. Officers got into a foot chase when they arrived and say he dropped a gun before he barricaded himself in a room. He threatened to shoot officers and then started a fire in his own room. People on that side of the complex were evacuated along with several pets. The barricaded man then tried to end things in a bad way.
"He came out on the balcony. He threatened to hang himself. He actually had some sort of bed sheet or material wrapped around his neck. He hung over the balcony, and that's when officers actually grabbed his legs and lowered him to the ground," says Lt. Hans Walters with Metro.
That man was taken to the hospital to treat injuries he received to his neck and smoke inhalation. Metro says the man will face several charges related to arson, auto theft, and evasion. Residents were let back in their rooms shortly after his capture.
