Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- A one-year-old boy is dead after being attacked by his family's pet dog.
The attack happened Friday evening in the 1600 block of Naverre Lane near Arroyo Grande Boulevard while the boy was celebrating his first birthday. The boy died early Saturday morning.
Authorities say the boy was on the floor with his grandmother, when he crawled over to the family's dog and started petting him. The dog then attacked the boy.
The dog, a Mastiff/Rhodesian mix weighing about 120 pounds, latched his mouth around the boy's head and began shaking him. The grandmother tried to pull the boy away from the dog.
The boy was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive his injuries.
Henderson Animal Control officers took the dog to the Henderson Animal Shelter, where he will be quarantined for ten days of observation. The dog has been declared vicious and will be euthanized after the observation period.
The family has owned the dog since he was a puppy and said he has never been aggressive toward people.
A fund to help the family pay for funeral expenses has been established at Wells Fargo. The name of the fund is the Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan Memorial Fund. The account number is 7709151398.
