Post Offices in Las Vegas see tax day rush

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - It's tax day. You have until midnight tonight to get your tax return in the mail or file for an extension.

Tax day is one of the busiest for local post offices. Although most taxpayers will file electronically, the IRS shows 45 percent of people will still mail their returns.

"There is only one office that is going to be open late tonight and that's here at 1001 East Sunset and we'll be open until midnight," said Marilyn Fenimore, a spokesperson for the USPS.

But don't show up at 11:55 p.m. If you have to wait in line and don't make that midnight deadline, you will not get the required April 17 postmark. This will result in IRS penalties.

Make sure to take extra care on your way. New research finds that traffic fatalities rise an average of six percent on tax day, comparable to the danger of driving on Super Bowl Sunday.

Experts suggest filing online tonight to avoid the post office rush. Most sites offer a tax calculator that will double check your math, then file electronically for you.

A few things to look out for: Don't forget your Social Security number and to sign your return. And double check that you have the correct amount of postage and the right IRS mailing address before you drop it in the mail.
