Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Thousands of people got an early start to their Sunday morning all for a good cause, the AIDSwalk.

The annual event put on by Aid for AIDS Nevada (AFAN) is celebrating its 22nd year in Las Vegas.

Previously, the walk took place downtown, but this year it was moved to the UNLV campus.  However, the change in venue didn't stop a record-breaking crowd from showing up and donating thousands of dollars, all in an effort to stop the deadly virus.

“A lot of people think the fight is over, just because of all the new medications that are out,” said Keith Frank, who was participating in his 9th AIDSwalk.  “But, the fight is not over; there is still no cure, so that's why we still walk.”

Frank, an elementary school teacher got to walk the route wearing a crown, a gift from AFAN to individuals who raise more than $1,000.

Organizers believe about 8,000 people walked in this year’s event.

AFAN Executive Director Antioco Carrillo said they hoped to raise $500,000.

All of that money goes to support AFAN and their services, like doctors, counseling, food, transportation, and of course educating others on how to prevent themselves from contracting AIDS.
