Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- After 8-year-old Spencer Melvin collapsed and died just minutes before a local Little League game, the community is coming together to remember him and help his family.

"If you had met Spencer, or if you know Spencer you know that when he smiles he lights up the room," Eric Nichols, the vice president of Peccole Little League said. "He was just an average healthy kid who loved playing baseball."

Nichols says that's what makes it so difficult for the community to grasp that Spencer Melvin collapsed and died just minutes before a game Tuesday night at Rainbow Family Park.

The tragedy has sparked a flood of support for his grieving family. It started with plans for a $5-a-plate spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Saturday.

"From that it has grown to something unbelievable," Nichols said.

Jeanne Bullock, Peccole Little League secretary and treasurer, said community support includes a Sam's Club donation of enough food for 600 people at Saturday's fundraiser.

Special patches bearing Spencer's name and number will be sold at the event, with proceeds going to his family.

Bullock says they have received requests for those patches from Little League teams as far away as Florida. Spencer's team, the Cardinals, will wear those patches on their sleeves at their next game on Tuesday.

Eric Nichols says this loss if a reminder of what's important.

"Just appreciate what you have, because anything could happen at any time," Nichols said. "If you have kids, hug 'em tonight."
