Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Spencer Melvin took his last breath, just minutes before his Little League baseball game Tuesday night at Rainbow Family Park.

The 8-year-old was walking to the field with his father and brother, who are also his coaches. Witnesses say the young boy suddenly collapsed.

"The hardest part was watching his father, try desperately to save Spencer's life," says Jennifer Riley. "I was walking right by them when it happened. No one knew what was going on."

Other parents and coaches rushed to help. But it was too late. The young boy's heart had stopped. Spencer's father says it appears to be the result of an undetected congenital heart condition.

"I'm a mother of a young boy, so I just put myself in their place, and it breaks my heart," says Claire Hopkins, who stopped to put flowers at the memorial for Spencer that has formed at the park. "Hold your kids tight, and just cherish them, because you never know, you never know."

Little League teams from all over the valley have started collecting money to help Spencer's family pay for funeral and medical expenses. Those teams will also observe this Saturday, April 14, as Spencer Melvin Day. There will be a spaghetti lunch and dinner served at Rainbow Family Park from noon to 6 p.m.
