Tree service companies busy after wind storm

Tree service companies busy after wind storm

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The windstorm that hit Southern Nevada on Tuesday created a lot of work for tree service companies on Wednesday.

In Henderson, Jim Hoffman said branches in his driveway are better than a hole in his roof. When the wind whipped up, a huge thorny mesquite tree in his front yard began swaying dangerously.

"I was really worried it was going to hit the garage, or fall on my room," Hoffman said. "It was crazy."

From Hoffman's mesquite to a pine tree that pummeled apartments in the central part of the valley, calls to Vegas Best Tree Service were emergencies.

"Everybody else I called said that it would take them a couple of days. He came right out," Hoffman said.

Mikhail Emelyanov, the owner of Vegas Best Tree Service, said his phone started ringing at 6 a.m.

"Every time, I start getting phone calls if the wind's over 30 miles an hour or so, and yesterday I believe we got more than that," Emelyanov said.

Emelyanov and his crew's first stop was to remove the 30-foot tree in a back yard near the Boulevard Mall. It hit power lines and dangled over a pool.

At 11 a.m., the tree's trunk, branches and an electrician were still on scene. Emelyanov said fifteen calls across Southern Nevada included the unintended consequence of converting from grass to desert landscaping. He pointed to the dry roots of the downed pine that hit the apartment complex roof and said, "It wasn't getting enough water, and this is the result."

Other possible results for homeowners who don't water or trim their trees regularly, include big bills.

Hoffman said insurance won't cover the cost of his tree. He expects to pay about $700out of his own pocket, not including the cost of a new tree.
