Hero rescues neighbors from devastating apartment fire
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A quick-thinking neighbor is credited with saving lives at the Oasis Bay Apartment complex on East Katie near Maryland Parkway Tuesday morning. He ran door-to-door, waking his sleeping neighbors as smoke and flames billowed from a balcony on the second floor.
The Action News Hawk caught the flames roaring through the roof at about 6:30 Tuesday morning, just after Clark County Firefighters were called to the 2-alarm blaze in Carilon Cloutier's apartment.
Cloutier says "I was getting ready for work and then I heard some noise outside; somebody's banging on our door, and then I went to our living room and I saw the smoke coming out from our gas heater outside the balcony and then the fire was blowing outside."
Neighbor Tim Roman saw the flames. He says he called 911, "And then started knocking on everybody's doors from downstairs to upstairs, and so by the time everybody got out, they were pretty much safe."
It was a traumatic morning for Cloutier, a single mother of two. She says, "This is not the only thing that happened to me right now. My brother just died. My mom almost died in the Philippines and now I have the fire. It's too much for me right now."
But she adds, ultimately only one thing matters. She says she's just happy her son and her daughter are safe.
Damage from the fire is estimated at $70,000 dollars. The Cloutier' and their two downstairs neighbors are being helped by family, friends and the Red Cross.
