There is no doubt that our pets become important parts of our families and our lives.

A story about a beloved dog's last day on Earth in Texas has gone viral, and there isn't a dry eye in the house.

Duke's last day before being put to sleep was captured by photographer and animal lover Robyn Arouty. Duke actually belonged to her friend Jordan. He was adopted by Jordan when she was expecting her first child. Shortly after her daughter turned one, Duke was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

One of his front legs was amputated. He received chemotherapy and, for a while, all was good.

But then he was diagnosed with hemngiosarcoma, and that tumor was growing rapidly and it hurt. Ultimately, they decided it would be best to put the loyal dog to sleep.

But before they did, Duke's family decided to treat him to one very special day, and it was caught in a series of moving photographs.

The photos show Duke eating what was apparently his favorite food -- hamburgers. Next, he spent time with his owner and family. His neighbors, twin boys, dropped by for snuggles. His groomer also came for a visit.

Duke also enjoyed a romp through a neighborhood water park.

Finally, the vet arrived to give Duke the shot that would allow him to escape the pain.

To find out more about Duke, watch his adoption story on YouTube, and view the photos at the link above.
