Frontier Airlines adds carry-on fee

By Julianne Cassidy. CREATED Apr 29, 2014

Denver-based low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is now charging passengers for carry-on bags. The exception? If the bag can fit under the seat then it's free.

The former executive VP of the Florida-based Spirit Airlines is the newly appointed president of Frontier Airlines. Spirit also has low base fares, yet charges for additional options including carry-on bags.

Frontier Airlines has reportedly defended its new bag charge and calls its "unbundled" airfare economical, noting that it allows customers to pay only for what services they want. The charge for a carry-on is for the actual room in an overhead bin. However, "those who buy an economy fare will also have to pay additional fees for seats near the front of the plane and with more leg room. Those charges start at $3," reports the Chicago Tribune.

In conjunction with the new fees, Frontier Airlines "said it simplified its price structure and cut its lowest economy fares by 12 percent," further reports the Chicago Tribune.

The airline's new overhead bin charge for carry-on luggage ranges from $20 to $50, depending on whether the service is paid for online ahead of time or at the gate prior to departure.
