OMAHA, NE – In an email to Action 3 News Wednesday, an official with the Health and Human Services Department confirmed the number of detained immigrant children in Nebraska and Iowa.
Kenneth J Wolfe with the Administration for Children and Families said no undocumented children were detained in shelters in Iowa or Nebraska. Wolfe did confirm from January to June, 2014 the government released 192 minors from the Unaccompanied Alien Children Program to sponsors in Nebraska. Another 122 were released to Iowa sponsors.
Tens of thousands of unaccompanied, undocumented children remain detained in border states, waiting on deportation hearings.
